2007

Entry 664, on 2007-12-31 at 22:04:24 (Rating 3, Comments)

At the end of 2006 I commented on the year and wished for a better result this year (see my blog entry for 31 December 2006). Unfortunately, it doesn't really seem to have worked out that way. The problems I lamented at the end of last year seem to have remained and he trends I identified seem to have continued, so really nothing much has changed.

The Internet continues to increase in importance to me, although nothing really new has come along that makes things fundamentally different. Internet applications seem to be taking off but its far from certain that they will really be important long term. Blogs and podcasts continue to gain in usefulness.

International politics are slowly improving with the end of Tony Blair in the UK and Howard in Australia. Bush continues on but has lost much of his power. But I must repeat that I am not too enthusiastic about the alternative there. Iraq and Afghanistan don't seem to be much better - maybe they're worse. Now Pakistan looks unstable. The conflict between Islamic nations and the western world looks more problematic than ever.

Apple is looking even better now than last year. They still have a long way to go to get a truly significant market share but they have established a good consistent rate of progress so Apple fans have good reason to expect even better things in the future. I still love my MacBook Pro and my new iPod Nano is a thing of beauty!

Global warming has reached the point where only the most unreasonable people now doubt it. Unfortunately, doing something about it continues to be a problem. Maybe the end of the Bush presidency will help.

Last year I said "In summary, I don't think 2006 will be seen as a great year for the human race in general. Maybe 2007 will be better". Unfortunately now that the year is finished I don't see any reason to consider that it was any better than last.
