A Good Year

Entry 683, on 2008-01-28 at 19:52:21 (Rating 2, Computers)

We all know that Vista is a failure, right? But what about Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard? Some commentators are writing stories suggesting Leopard is also full of bugs and not worth having. Others are saying it is a useful upgrade with many worthwhile new features. So who is right?

You will probably not be surprised to know that I would tend to agree with the second opinion: that Leopard is a really worthwhile update. I have been using it intensively since before it was released (don't ask) and it has given me no significant problems at all. I find the new features really useful, although I know some less computer literate users who have noticed very little change since Tiger.

But if you still do have concerns about changing, or have changed and encountered a few problems, help is here from Apple! Mac OS X 10.5.2 is just about to be released and it improves 40 different programs while fixing over 100 bugs. the update is likely to be around 600MB in size so it must do a lot!

Its a bit annoying that all of these things are only done properly months after the initial release, and its a nuisance having to download something that big, but at least this will give us more confidence in the reliability of the OS - assuming we didn't already have it, of course.

And - I almost can't believe I'm saying this with some degree of excitement - Microsoft Office 2008 has finally been released. Because of Microsoft's odd release schedule I haven't seen it here in New Zealand yet, and I probably won't use it when it does arrive, but my many clients who have to use Office will at least now have a version which is designed for the Intel processor in the computer they are using instead of using the Rosetta compatibility environment!

So it seems that after the impressive increases in market share and record profits posted by Apple it should be another good year for Mac, iPod, iPhone, and other Apple product users!
