Windows Linux Mac

Entry 847, on 2008-09-06 at 16:38:57 (Rating 2, Computers)

Today I read a short comparison of Windows Vista and Suse Linux by a local technology commentator. I haven't used either much so I suppose I shouldn't comment, but why break the habit of a lifetime?

The problem with many of these comparisons, where different features are rated to give a total score at the end, is that really important features score one and others, which might not even be relevant, can cancel that by scoring one for the other side. To give you an example: ease of installation was worth one point and so was overall performance. But hopefully its only necessary to install the OS once but the performance matters all the time. How can these be equal?

Another problem was the fact that this person didn't even add the score up properly so that didn't really help the overall credibility.

There was another point too. The conclusion criticised Linux because it was hard to use, and Windows because it was too insecure and slow. So why not get an OS that's easier to use than Windows and still fast and secure? Get the best of both worlds and install Mac OS X. I know you need a Mac but they aren't too much more expensive than PCs any more. But Mac's weren't even mentioned.

I just watched the first Microsoft ad which is supposed to make Microsoft look cool and make everyone want to go out and buy Vista. They paid Jerry Seinfeld $10 million for this crap? Microsoft have always made fairly horrible software but I thought, at least, their marketing was up to standard. Apparently not.

I keep hearing rumours about what Apple are about to announce in a few days. Maybe it will be new iPods and new laptops. Well it will almost certainly be those, but what about something really different. Why wouldn't Apple create a really cheap Mac - something like the Mac Mini but updated - and compete with the PCs at the cheap end of the market as well? I think that's what they need to do next.
