Don't Panic!

Entry 169, on 2005-05-08 at 22:09:23 (Rating 1, Activities)

Well, I made it to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie yesterday. I am a long time fan of HG2G and I didn't expect it to be particularly good. Maybe it was because I had such low expectations that I wasn't too disappointed. It was actually quite a humorous movie. The rest of my family - who knew nothing about the TV, radio or book versions - seemed to quite like it as well.

There was a huge amount of humour I remember from the other versions which didn't appear, and a lot of the humour that did appear in the movie wasn't as good, but it was still worth watching. And the special effects were a bit better than the BBC TV version, too!

Maybe this will encourage people to re-visit the other versions and enjoy the more classic forms, such as the TV series which now is available on DVD.

I went to the movie with a sense of anticipation. And I have been looking forawrd to it for quite some time, Given the fact that I'm die hard about the books, I expect I should have been more disappointed, but I took it for what it was, and I have to say I really really enjoyed it.

Some parts of adams' reworked screenplay were a bit preplexing, but still overall I felt the movie crammed in about as much as the book as it could, and retained the classic cynical humour that delights each page.

lette (girlfriend) and her sister were absolutely awestruck by the movie, and most of the audience sat amazed, so it went down really well with people who had no idea what they let themselves in for.

On a final note, I have to say that the Magrathean factory was one of the most breathtaking pieces of cinematography and effects work that I've ever seen.

OK, I wasn't quite so positive but I basically agree with your comments. I guess they had to create something which worked on its own without requiring familiarity with the books, radio, or tv series. And, yes, the special effects and cinematography were good.
