Raging Grannies

Entry 232, on 2005-10-06 at 15:14:25 (Rating 4, Politics)

I listened to an interview with Betty Schroder, a member of the "Raging Grannies", this morning. This group consists of some more senior women in the US who oppose the war in Iraq. Its great to see Americans are beginning to see they made a big mistake by voting Bush back in for a second term (and yes, I know that not everyone voted for him, in fact many Americans are horrified he won the presidential election, so I don't mean to criticise all Americans, or even those who voted for him - I guess they thought they were doing the right thing at the time, maybe some of them still do).

The grannies believe the war isn't about helping the Iraqis or removing an evil dictator, in fact its motivated by the need for control of the region and simple greed of those who are currently in power in Washington. They believe they must get rid of what they call the evil in power, specifically Bush and his supporters, and that he'll be impeached before his time as president is complete.

They also think that the solution to the Iraq problem is simply for the Americans and their allies to leave, and that the Iraqis will then sort their internal problems out themselves. I'm not sure if this is realistic. the Americans have made a total mess of the country. Maybe they should fix it before they leave. Of course most times the Americans try to fix international political issues they seem to make them a lot worse, so maybe the grannies are right, the military should leave and let Iraqi internal politics sort things out. In that case maybe Bush should join our friend Saddam Hussein, and be tried as a war criminal.

So poor old George isn't enjoying much support. Even the grannies don't like him now. If he had any decency he'd just admit his presidency has been a disaster and resign immediately. But, of course the words decency and politics don't often go together!
