Random Comments 2

Entry 425, on 2006-11-13 at 15:58:48 (Rating 2, Comments)

This blog entry is composed of comments on a few different topics which have no connecting theme. They are totally random comments, but often those are the best.

First, I have got to say: never ignore the obvious before pursuing the obscure. This applies to everything, but I am using it in connection with a computer consulting job I did this morning. I was asked to investigate the disappearance of files from a computer and recover them if possible. In the process I discovered that the latest version of Data Rescue II is a valuable tool to recover erased files (on a Mac).

Unfortunately it turned out recovering the files wasn't necessary because the user had simply logged in with the wrong account, and was looking at someone else's files. When we logged in as the correct user, there all the files were. I noticed the second user, but didn't mention it because it was just too obvious. But the key fact is: nothing is ever too obvious, always start with the basics and work from there.

I've got to mention the fact that the All Blacks beat the French rugby team by 47 points to 3 in the weekend. France is supposed to be the second best team in the world and yet they were totally demolished by the mighty All Blacks! Surely not even New Zealand can throw away next year's Rugby World Cup this time!

The American public has suddenly realised how they have been deceived by George Bush and his Republican party and have voted against the GOP in the midterm elections. I'm glad I don't live in America and make the choice between two fairly awful alternatives, because the Democrats don't seem to be a lot more attractive as a voting option. Maybe the US should adopt a more democratic system like we have here in New Zealand where minor parties can have some influence, because it seems that the government's minor partners are the ones with all the good ideas.

I'm waiting for a new computer to arrive. I've been using a PowerBook G4 for a few years now, but its time to upgrade to an Intel Core 2 Duo machine which should give me about 10 times the raw power. Of course, the 17 inch model has been delayed so I'll have to struggle on with the old machine for a while. It doesn't matter though, after all its not what you've got, its how you use it that really matters!
