Signs

Entry 475, on 2007-02-13 at 16:34:37 (Rating 2, Comments)

In my last blog entry I mentioned that I had seen signs that criticising religion was becoming more acceptable. I didn't realise that the comment could be taken quite so literally until I saw the sign shown here.

It has become trendy recently for Christians to leave little signs and spray painted notices around the place proclaiming that "Jesus Saves". The advertising campaign for Tui beer has used the slogan "yeah right" in response to a set of doubtful statements, such as: I only read it for the articles, Yeah right; I was reading her t-shirt, Yeah right; etc. By the way, if this sounds familiar it might be because I have already blogged on this subject on 19 August 2006. Obviously the "yeah, right" indicates incredulity regarding the original statement.

The original advert was: we shouldn't, we're flatmates. Yeah, right. But someone has painted under that: Jesus saves. Yeah right. It looks like someone else has then tried to paint over that. I like the ways billboards become an arena for public debate!

I love those Tui signs. That one is a bit weak, but the extra comment makes it much better. I wonder if Tui would ever be brave enough to use that slogan on a real sign?

As far as I know its never been used on a real billboard, but you could make your own here.
