The latest stats for Apple are very positive. Shipping over 2 million Macs during the quarter and making nearly a billion dollars in profit isn't a bad effort. OK, the market share for Apple computers is still only in single digits, but it is heading up rapidly. And as I have mentioned several times in the past, I don't really want Apple to be the dominant company in the computer market, but I do want it to be significant.
Apple needs a certain market share to be relevant. If the industry is going to create software (especially games), peripherals, and provide support for a platform they need a reasonable market to aim at. If Apple got to between 10% and 20% (this is quite realistic in the next few years because some estimates show them currently on 8%) then it will be at a point where it can't be ignored. The current market share is just low enough that it will always be a second class citizen according to many people.
If the launch of Leopard is successful then Apple will have a distinct advantage over Microsoft who have had a less than spectacular response with Vista. I can't imagine any Apple OS causing the dissension that Vista has. How can Microsoft work on something for at least 7 years and still come up with an "upgrade" that is this unsuccessful? Apple have had 1 to 2 years to work on their next OS and I'm sure it will be far more acceptable to most users.
So with the Mac doing well, the iPod selling even more than before (even though it was overwhelmingly popular to start with), the iPhone generating huge interest, and Microsoft stumbling badly with Vista, things look good for Apple's immediate future. Maybe all those PC users I said should switch will now see that I was right and they might join the superior platform!
