Entry 725, on 2008-03-24 at 21:40:38 (Rating 1, Activities)

One of the categories I use to classify my blog entries is "activities". I use this to discuss interesting things I've been doing. Over the Easter break I often do something interesting: every two years I usually go to the Warbirds Over Wanaka air show, for example (full reports for this are at my web site here).

This year I was planning on getting up early, driving three hours to get to Wanaka as the show started, and watching it. But I was too lazy and didn't get up in time. So I really haven't achieved anything during this long weekend. There wasn't much at this year's show that I hadn't already seen but I still feel bad that I didn't go.

And to make matters worse the weather was superb. I did some astronomy on Sunday night from Dunedin and the conditions were really nice. I could have taken my telescope into Central Otago, which has some of New Zealand's clearest, darkest skies and done some astronomy as well. Anyway, I'll read this blog entry next time I'm thinking about doing something and it will remind me that I'll regret being a slacker!

Hmmm, Easter Trading Hours was a hot issue on many blogs but I see you have not spoken on it. Care to discuss your views?

Would I like to make my views on a subject public? Hmmm, let me think... OK! I think having a day where most retailers are closed is an inconvenience to some people, but since its only one of very few days where this happens what is the real harm? The original religious reasons for the holiday are largely irrelevant now, but what's wrong with having a day free of the gross consumerism our society seems to subsist on?

Satisfactory reply! It's an issue where right-wing Conservatives and left-wing Liberals genuinely agree. And not necessarily for different reasons. I think both groups agree on the last bit you mentioned: "having a day free of the gross consumerism our society seems to subsist on".

PS I love winding up the right-wing Liberals on this one.

We seem to be agreeing an a few issues recently. Is this a worrying trend, or what?

Comment 5 (1395) by SBFL on 2008-04-13 at 22:39:36:

Heh. Not a bad idea as it winds up some threads, which the number of was becoming a bit unmanageable for me. I'll keep an eye out for a new post of yours where I can be more hard-hitting ;-)

OK, but let me know if I'm not being controversial enough. Its hard to strike a balance where my posts are controversial without straying into being argumentative just for the sake of it!

Comment 7 (1407) by SBFL on 2008-04-16 at 00:13:31:

Certainly don't be controversial for the sake of it. As an atheist semi-liberal leftie, I am sure to find plenty to correct you on ;-)

Correct me? Feel free to try. I'm always prepared to listen to alternative views. Generally the truth lies somewhere between the extreme views but I don't see myself as being extreme - except perhaps in my opposition to superstition (including religion).

"Correct me? Feel free to try. I'm always prepared to listen to alternative views. " The ;-) in my previous comment indicates a cheeky grin which means don't take the preceding comment to seriously - just a bit of jest to wind you up.

"Generally the truth lies somewhere between the extreme views - Agreed.
