If you are getting error such as this in Word: "The Open XML file Normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, <>|\"/)." check for invalid characters (especially " < > |) in the complete path, including all the folders in the path containing the file and the volume name.
