On Saturday morning we took the fast ferry across the bay from Paihia to the historic town of Russell. The British settlers thought they had better have a cannon to help defend the new township against Maori raiding parties. It didn't prove too effective because the Maoris just avoided it, but its still sitting on the waterfront 150 years later.
