Next Up to OJB's Story Wayne (1) This is a photo of my younger brother Wayne when we went fishing on Lake Wanaka recently. Wayne is a real "outdoors" type (the opposite of me really) who works for the Department of Conservation in some remote location in Southland. The only atypical aspect of this photo is the lack of a "roll your own" cigarette hanging from his mouth. I was tempted to add one in Photoshop but decided I wanted these to be unmodified photos. I guess the best things about this photo get back to the old themes of lighting, camera angle and colour range again. The camera angle and lighting on the face give the feeling of informality and calm to the photo. The colours are the browns and blues which really fit in with this area of the country. The background is just out of focus enough so that it forms a neutral backdrop to the subject but is still sufficiently clear to see reflections of the surrounding hills in the water of the lake. The focus and exposure are perfect. I usually use a very centralised focus and exposure mode on the camera and this combined with the cool eye controlled focus on the EOS-5 gives best results most of the time. |
