Poor Old Bill!

Entry 468, on 2007-02-03 at 15:16:20 (Rating 4, Computers)

Bill Gates was never the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he had a certain innate cunning which allowed him to use other peoples' skills, his family's influence, and a few dirty tricks, to become a superstar of technology through his company, Microsoft. On the other hand, he has always had a certain dignity and his behaviour, opinions and ideas have never been totally crazy like new CEO, Steve Ballmer (has that guy got some sort of psychiatric problem?)

The reason I have launched this blog entry with this tirade is that Bill seems to be losing it. The fact that almost no one likes his new OS seems to have unhinged him somewhat and he's going around making quite hysterical comments - some of them against Apple. I guess it must be distressing when he throws so much time and money at Vista and still gets a half-baked pile of junk at the end of it, while Apple continues to innovate and create a much better product far more quickly, easily and cheaply.

First he's criticising Apple's advertising, even though it demonstrates a valid point relating to Vista, and is intended as a light-hearted dig more than a technically accurate comment. Then he said "Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine." Um, which planet is this he's talking about? Poor old Bill, he's really lost it this time!

This theme has been taken up by several commentators. Several of them have also claimed that Gates is losing his mind. I'm not sure if they mean this literally or whether they are just trying to make the point that he is sounding a bit desperate.

Yes, I was pleased to see that others agree with me on this one!
