Jesus, Jesus, Jesus

Entry 590, on 2007-08-20 at 20:12:56 (Rating 4, Religion)

There's a web site which is based on the same system as YouTube called GodTube. As you might have guessed form the title, its a movie site for religious people, which in the US really means Christians. When I heard this place existed I just had to go and have a look. Some of the movies were so outrageously false I had to start commenting on them which lead to a few robust debates with believers and finally I was banned.

I guess they really didn't want to know the truth. It reminds me of one of my favourite quotes which I usually attribute to believers in various dubious beliefs: "I've already made up my mind, please don't confuse me with the facts". Of course believers don't really say that, but it reflects what they are doing subconsciously.

Well the point of mentioning GodTube is that its where I saw a very amusing movie. It was obviously a spoof and involved someone pretending to be a Christian offering advice to other Christians on how to deal with inconvenient contradictions to their beliefs. It involved something like putting your hands over your ears and repeating Jesus, Jesus, Jesus... The way it was done in the movie was quite hilarious. Strangely, that movie seemed to disappear.

The thing that lead me to remember that movie is a podcast I listened to today from the Infidel Guy. It was a debate between Kent Hovind (a prominent young-Earth creationist) and Massimo Pigliucci (an associate professor at an American University who researches evolution).

Hovind is quite a skilled debater (especially considering the position he is defending is so obviously wrong) but occasionally Pigliucci would trap him and he'd have no answer. Then we'd see the Hovind version of "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus". He'd just ignore the real point and quote something totally irrelevant like "evolutionists say we all evolved from a rock" (that's not what evolutionists think happened anyway) or "we've never seen a banana evolve into a dog" (that's true, but no one is saying we should).

Its like a particularly sick form of self-flagellation making myself listen to a creationist arguing his point, I sometimes find myself saying "liar" or "oh puh-lease" or "straw man" or "answer the question". People must think I'm a bit weird because most people are just humming along with the music when they listen to their iPod!

Maybe next time a creationist starts spouting off the same old junk time after time I should just cover my ears and say Darwin, Darwin, Darwin...

I assume you've never heard of www.mychurch.com? I'm pretty sure it's related to GodTube. On the subject, that video did get its point across very humorously. I disagree with its deletion, too.

OK, that mychurch site seems to be a complete waste of time. I found some nice Christian t-shirts though! But I found some even better atheist t-shirts on the Internet. Here's a few good captions: blasphemy is a victimless crime, atheism is a non-prophet organization, I love Roman lions, stop praying - stop talking to yourself, there's a sucker born-again every minute.

Those are pretty funny, I'll admit. (Except for the Roman lions one; that'd be tasteless no matter what the context.)

I see your point about the Roman lions joke but I think it is acceptable now because the events it describes are so far in the past. There's a point where the most atrocious behaviour becomes OK as material for humour.

True. Still, if you wear a shirt like that in public, you might as well wear one that says, "I love fundies in my face". It's pretty much inviting a fight.

Really! Is that a good way to start a fight with a fundie? Sounds entertaining. I haven't had any witnesses or other proselytisers around to argue (oops, I mean debate) with recently. Maybe wearing a t-shirt like that would be a good way to begin a "dialog"! :)

If that's how you get your kicks...
