Darwin's Deadly Legacy

Entry 606, on 2007-09-11 at 21:50:05 (Rating 5, Religion)

I recently read about a documentary which will soon be released in the US called "Darwin's Deadly Legacy". I haven't seen this documentary and I don't usually comment on movies, TV programs, etc, which I haven't viewed, but this one is just so blatantly nonsensical that I felt I had to. Apparently Christians seem to think that ignoring the commandment about lying is OK because, when it comes to evolution, they seem to think lies are fine.

The documentary, by someone called Dr. James Kennedy and Coral Ridge Ministries, claims to examine the "chilling social impact" of Darwin's theory of evolution plus "the mounting evidence that Darwin had it wrong on the origin of life."

What a pile of junk! Evolution doesn't really have anything to do with the origin of life anyway, but where this "mounting evidence" is coming from I have no idea. The only mounting evidence in the real world (as opposed to the fantasy world that fundamentalist nuts live in) is the evidence supporting evolution - especially the new molecular information.

And trying to link Hitler with Darwin is a bit desperate. Maybe they are just trying to disguise the fact that the complete opposite was true: Hitler was a Christian, and Christian ideas influenced a lot of his actions. Of course, one of Hitler's friends, Goebbels said "tell a lie often enough and it becomes the truth". Obviously the fundies are also using this propaganda technique which worked so well for the Nazis.

But what is so scary about evolution to these people? I mean, very few people really care about how life evolved on Earth. If they believe some sort of mystical nonsense, such as Christianity, they have compartmentalised that aspect of their life to the extent that its usually protected against the facts. So why continually raise the issue and draw attention to the fact that their beliefs aren't true?

In reality they would be better off taking a more low-key approach and encouraging people to become Christians by emphasising the social and philosophical aspects of it. Just forget about trying to prove a bunch of old myths that anybody with a scrap of honesty and intelligence can see are untrue. God created Earth in 6 days: didn't happen. Earth is 6000 years old: not true. The Earth was completely flooded: no sorry, just a story. Jesus performed all sorts of amazing miracles: seems very unlikely.

Why not just stick to ideas like Christianity has a lot of positive philosophy associated with it (but a lot of negative philosophy too). Christianity provides a good social life and support environment for its followers (but also provides a lot of poor leadership and leads many people astray) and Christians do a lot of good in the world (but a lot of evil as well).

Actually, I've just talked myself out of that idea. Let's get rid of Christianity (and other religions) completely - they are a blight on humanity!
