As I predicted, Joseph Ratzinger was elected as the new Pope. I guess it shouldn't be surprising since, as I said in a previous blog, the vote was stacked in favour of returning a conservative like him. Unfortunately, its hard to see how anyone could be much worse, in terms of ultra-conservatism, that Ratzinger.
I guess I should give him a chance to prove himself before assuming he will follow this line, but initial indications aren't good. He has said that John Paul II's spirit is guiding him, so we can only hope that the more positive aspects of the previous Pope's personality will come through as well as the not so positive ones.
While we are on the subject of guiding spirits, I thought it was quite amusing that the cardinals who elected him claimed to be guided by God. You would imagine if that was the case they would all receive the same message and the first vote would be 100% for God's chosen candidate, but I guess its somehow more complicated than that!

That last remark about guided by the hand of god is um so true!

That last comment is a weak attempt to support your athiest views. I would expect something better!!

I wasn't really trying to present that as a serious part of the debate into the validity of the church. It was something I was amused by, and was intended as a humorous comment. I think you might have taken it a bit more seriously that I intended!

Okay, I did take it a bit seriously if you intended it for a bit of humour. I'll read a few more of your blogs and get to know your writing style!
