Update: Amadeus Pro

Because I do a reasonable amount of sound editing I updated to Amadeus Pro and it has proved useful many times. The major new feature I have used is multiple channels. This allows merging multiple sources in an elegant way: for example a speech track and background music or sound in a podcast.

Amadeus

Amadeus is an excellent sound editing program. For basic purposes I think it is the best program available. I use it for extracting sound in various formats for web site and program use, for processing sound for podcasts, and for preparing sound from analog sources ready to use as MP3s or on CDs.

Amadeus can open many different types of sound file, and can save in many formats, so it can also be used to convert sound from one format to another. Its the only basic Mac sound editing program I know which can save as MP3. Large files aren't a problem because it can use the disk to store extra sound data.

Useful sound processing options include...

Amplification (increasing or decreasing the volume of the sound
Fading (fading the volume up and down, useful at the start or end of a sound)
Pitch and speed (the speed can be increased without changing the pitch)
Equalisation (including a 10 band graphic equaliser)
Stereo utilities (Adjusting phase, cross-fades, etc)
Sound repair (Reduce clicks and other defects in the sound)
Noise reduction (Reduce white noise and other problems with analog sound)
And many others

There are also various tools to analyse the sound, for example displaying a graph of sound volume over a range of frequencies, a live oscilloscope of sound from an input device, and several others.

Waveform

I've zoomed in to see the details in this podcast - the individual words are clearly visible - and I'm about to apply a fade in on the first fraction of a second of the sound just to make the start of the sound a bit cleaner.

So if you need an audio tool for your Mac I recommend Amadeus. You can try it for a trial period (minus some features) and the shareware fee is quite reasonable at just US$30. Oh yeah, there's one more thing. Mozart is my favourite composer, and I see him every time I look at the Amadeus icon!
