Enemy Engaged

Enemy Engaged is a helicopter simulator. You can fly the American Apache or the Russian Hokum attack helicopter against a wide variety of enemy forces, including troops equipped with anti-aircraft missiles, tanks, armoured personnel carriers, helicopters and jet fighters. Currently I only have the demo version, but the commercial version has multi-player mode and many more locations to fly in.

The simulation is quite realistic, so it takes a while to learn the many flight, navigation, and weapons systems, so this isn't a game for someone who just wants to start playing instantly. I checked the quick keyboard guide, and counted over 120 key combinations to control the simulation! Luckily there is a pause option you can use in single user mode so you can go and check the key to switch on an essential option, such as chaff or flares as a SAM is heading towards you!

The title of this page shows a view of the Apache from outside while hovering over a town in Lebanon. The modelling of the helicopter is very realistic, and the town is also quite detailed.

Learning the tactics to locate enemy forces, avoid anti-aircraft missiles and other hazards, and fly the aircraft smoothly, is not trivial, but this is a realistic flight simulator, not just a simple game.

I ran the game on my Powerbook G4 17" 1.33 GHz with every feature on maximum detail, including the screen set to full resolution (1440 x 900) and the animation and game play was very smooth, so on slower machines it should still run fine with some of the video options set a bit lower. I just used the keyboard to control the game, but obviously a joystick or other control system designed for flight would be much better, there is a calibration system to setup these devices.
