Shut Down Apps on iDevices

iPhones and iPads automatically manage the apps you have running, go there is usually no need to shut down an app after you have finished using it. But sometimes an app might continue running in the background, slowing down your device, or draining the battery.

To shut down, or force quit, an app, first get into the App Switcher (see below). This shows all the running apps across the screen. You can scroll through them left and right, tap on one to activate it, or force quit it by swiping it up and off the screen.

There are two ways to get into the App Switcher, depending on the age of your phone.

On older phones, with a home button...
Just double-click (press twice quickly) the home button (the round one below the screen).

On newer phones, with no home button...
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and then hold for a moment.

As I said above, once in the App Switcher, just swipe the app window up and off the screen. You can do this to as many apps as you need to. Tap outside the apps windows to exit the App Switcher.

I usually write a blog post about once a week. The latest post can be viewed here: Avoid Microsoft: If you don't really like computers much you could make things a bit better for yourself.
