Block Emails in Apple Mail on Mac

You can block unwanted messages from specific senders in Mail on Mac.

Follow these steps to block receiving messages from specific email addresses using Apple's "Mail" program on Mac. Note: if you accidentally block the wrong person you can reverse this action.

Follow these steps...

Display a message from the person you want to block.
Move the pointer over the sender's name in the message header.
Click the small down-arrow at the right of the name.
Choose "Block Contact" from the pop-up menu which appears.
You should see an area above the email saying the user has been blocked.
You can click "Settings" here to specify what to do with blocked email (see below).

To reverse this, find a message form a blocked user, then use the same steps, except the option to block should have changed to unblock.

If you have one or several email address you want to block but don't have messages from them, you can block them using another technique. Note, the addresses need to be in your contacts list, so put them there first (even if you don't want messages from them; seems odd, I know).

Click the "Mail" menu, then "Settings".
Click "Junk Mail", then the "Blocked" tab.
Make sure "Enable blocked mail filtering" is ON.
Choose how to deal with blocked users...
Either choose "Mark as blocked mail, but leave in my inbox",
Or "Move it to the bin".
Click "+" to add an address which is already in your contacts.
Click on an address, then "-" to remove it from the blocked addresses.

I usually write a blog post about once a week. The latest post can be viewed here: Think for Yourself: In the end, everything is just an opinion. Be skeptical, and think for yourself! (posted 2026-04-25 at 21:12:02). Or go to the Home Page of My Blog to choose a post to view.

I do podcasts too! You can listen to my latest podcast, here: OJB's Podcast 2026-04-14 How Far is that Star?: How would we really know how big the universe is? Or subscribe to my podcast RSS feed, on my RSS Feeds page.

If you're not sure what to view from the thousands of pages on my site, here are some suggestions: My Latest Airshow Report (photos and movies from Warbirds Over Wanaka, 2026), My Favourite Wines and Beers (tasting notes for some of my favourites), An Interesting Astronomical Observation (learn a bit about astronomy from these observing notes), See Some Photos (A short rail journey through the Taieri Gorge), Read Some Mac Tips (Learn about how to use your Mac, and fix some problems).
