The Kaikoura coast provides a cool break from the heat of inland Marlborough to the north and Canterbury to the south when travelling between Christchurch and Blenhiem. A windy road, with a few tunnels scattered around, clings to the side of the hills within meters of the surf of the Pacific ocean. The township of Kaikoura itself provides some well known activities such as whale watching.
